The upcoming premiere of The CW’s new series, Roswell, New Mexico has me thinking about hometown spooky stories. For people who grew up near Roswell, their tall tales are all about crashed saucers, gray aliens, and government conspiracies. But, growing up just outside of Philadelphia, the campfire tales of the odd and unseen that I heard carried with them a particularly East Coast vibe of the macabre.

There were tales of vengeful ghosts in a shuttered penitentiary in Philly, where jail cells rattled and moaning reportedly rang through the halls. There were legends of the Jersey Devil stalking the Pine Barrens of rural New Jersey, its glowing eyes reflecting in many a high schooler’s headlights. And growing up just blocks from Valley Forge National Park, I heard countless tales of spectral soldiers in the Continental Army roaming aimlessly through the misty woods.
