Normal people don't want to stand alone on stage, telling jokes in front of a bunch of strangers. And normal people certainly don't want their innermost neuroses about pee-pee fetish queens and pregnant ex-wives to be shared with millions on national TV. Thank God for us, Marc Maron is a weird dude.
And his eponymous new IFC show, Maron, is sure to be as replete with gritty introspection and misanthropic musings as his world famous WTF Podcast, where the top minds in the comedy business come to dig deep before millions of loyal listeners. Created by and starring Marc, the new half-hour scripted series will also be chock-full of awkward sexual encounters, narcissism, and regret — relatable themes for anyone living on planet Earth.
Maron's first season run of 10 episodes will be based on his day-to-day as a comedian and impresario of comedy culture 2.0, featuring through-lines that include power struggles with his estranged dad, battles with internet trolls and the repressive constructs of modern masculinity, and, of course, a love interest who enjoys showers of the golden variety.
While the show is based on Marc's real life, it's important to note some surprising divergences. Judd Hirsch is not Marc's real dad, even though he plays him on Maron. Also, Josh Brenner — who plays Marc's assistant on the show — is an up-and-coming actor, not Marc's actual assistant. Andy Kindler, who plays Marc's long time best friend just met Marc a couple months ago during a pilot season screen test and, in the scandal of all scandals, Nora Zehetner, who plays Marc's girlfriend,is not his girlfriend off the set (neither is she Don Draper's nurse neighbor). Hollywood magic!
Maron will feature directors and guest stars known to have a life view as warped as the show's captain: Jeff Garlin, Gina Gershon, Bobcat Goldthwait, Ken Jeong, Denis Leary, Adam Scott, Eric Stoltz, and Danny Trejo are all slated to add their special brand of bizarre.
Maron starts tomorrow, Friday, May 3, at 10PM ET/PT on IFC. If you can't wait, you can get your first taste right here by watching the above clip, in which Marc attends a literary reading and discusses how the dip smells like pussy. You can even tweet about it using #Maron for maximum amounts of fun.
