In terms of morning-commute entertainment options, checking out your boss’ confidential email or peeking at your seatmate’s text-message fight with her boyfriend ranks far above reading that neglected novel in your bag. The temptation of getting the scoop on said boyfriend’s inability to commit (and his mother’s penchant for surprise Sunday visits) is just too enticing to avoid. The problem is, you don’t know who’s reading over your shoulder either.
Everyone’s guilty of a little visual hacking now and then. Unfortunately, since your smartphone is your best friend, there’s a good chance that the person in line at the grocery store will catch a glimpse of your social media feed or that snippy email from your mother.
Now’s your chance to tell us your own stories of visual hacking. Sound off in the comments about the time you were caught accidentally (sure...) spying on someone. Have you ever seen something you weren’t supposed to see at work? Witnessed your deskmate trolling on Gawker instead of working on that report? Mentally rewritten your subway neighbor’s dating profile on your way home? Or maybe you’ve been a victim of visual hacking and caught someone reading that brusque email to your coworker. This is your time to share.
And in the mean time, check out these tools to help protect yourself. Unless you really don’t mind that confidential work email leaking to the person in seat 5A, protect your information with removable privacy filters.
