It’s 11 p.m. on a weeknight, which means my roommate is about to walk in on me hunched over the stovetop, hard at work on my signature late-night snack.
It’s a corn tortilla, thrown directly over the gas burner (so as to avoid washing an unnecessary skillet), with cheese grated directly over the top. An open-faced quesadilla, if it had to be classified. I eat it with my hands (so as to avoid washing an unnecessary plate) and usually make another.
On nights when I’m craving something different, and my usual snack stockpiles aren’t cutting it, I start running through my mental roster of neighborhood options. There’s the banh mi place that closes at midnight, and the fried chicken joint that stays open until 1 a.m. The 24-hour corner stores and taco carts are a gift from heaven. Collectively, the residents of my apartment make an estimated five to seven ill-advised excursions per week for gummy bears, jerky sticks, deli sandwiches, and whatever else strikes our fancy at odd hours of the night.
Science tells me that we’re not alone in our desperation when it comes to late-night munchies. So, I’d like to hear about yours. Readers, what are your go-to midnight snacks?
Whatever our choices tend to be, there’s a new indulgence to add to our snack regimens: Nature Valley Granola Cups — aka crunchy, decadent granola vessels filled with peanut or almond butter. They’re chocolatey, nutty, and require less effort than any sad quesadilla or trip to a late-night eatery. Sold!
