I vividly remember sitting on the top bunk of my buddy’s bunk bed the first time I heard about a role-playing game. Two years older than me, he had the wisdom and patience needed to explain that, no, these games couldn’t be played through in one run. I relish these early days of RPG gaming, where I focused my time on exploring the opening areas of some of my favorites — like the millennial fair in Chrono Trigger and Spielburg in Quest for Glory. I loved those calm, quiet little towns, where I bopped about in relative safety, with one eye toward the danger that rests just outside the hamlet’s walls.

Playing around in the new mobile RPG Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space (yes, you read that title correctly) got me thinking about some of my favorite moments from the glory days of RPGs. Heavily inspired by the classic 1990s JRPGs of my childhood, the game was written by Masato Kato and composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, both veterans of the Xenogears and Chrono RPGs. And while playing, I couldn’t help but reminisce on cherished memories from my RPG-filled childhood.
